About You

I am a pianist, composer, and musicologist originally from California and currently residing in The Netherlands. I finished my MA in Cognitive Musicology at the University of Amsterdam and my BA double degree in Music (piano performance and musicology) and Italian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. During my time as an undergraduate, I studied with Richard Taruskin, Nicholas Mathew, and Jacqueline Chew, among others. When it comes to composing, my main influences include Steve Reich, John Adams, and Hans Otte, pop artists such as Radiohead, Björk, and The Flaming Lips, and cross-over artists such as Nils Frahm and Bryce Dessner. While some of my music could be categorized as indie- or neo-classical, I also write music that is strictly in either the contemporary classical music or the singer-songwriter genre, though elements of other genres are often present. In my songs, I sometimes use extended instrumental techniques found in contemporary classical and jazz music. Inversely, I write contemporary classical pieces which incorporate elements from pop music by inserting song-forms within a larger scale piece, as well as by maintaining a directness of expression, communication, and/or by relating a story. I maintains, however, the structure and complexity that is typically an integral part of contemporary classical music. I have been a songwriter since I was very young; I made up my first melody when I was 18 months old, and I have been writing out songs since high school. Though relatively new to composing instrumental music, my works are being performed ever more frequently in The Netherlands. Renowned Dutch pianist Ralph van Raat has performed my solo piano piece, Haze, already four times this year (with three more scheduled performances), to extremely appreciative audiences, and my piece for cello and piano, Cassel, is a finalist to be selected and performed during the November Music Festival in the Fall. I currently study composition with the Dutch composer, Anthony Fiumara.
